On October 16, at 8:00 PM, a truly magical chapter was written, bridging the deep historical roots of Woolloongabba with the modern beats of live music.
The area of Woolloongabba—situated right opposite the iconic Gabba stadium—is a pocket of Brisbane steeped in well over a century of history. A hundred years ago, this very precinct thrived as the absolute heart of the city's transport and tramway hub. It was a bustling gateway where lines met, tracks crossed, and the city’s energy was generated.
Nestled perfectly inside this heritage-listed precinct is Canvas Brisbane. While the bar itself doesn't stretch back a century, it holds a monumental place in Brisbane's modern cultural history. Launched in 2010, Canvas was one of the very first venues approved under Queensland's small bar licence scheme, pioneering the city's boutique nightlife scene and turning this antique shopping district into a sophisticated lifestyle hub. Now under the curation of Dan Rodriguez, Canvas stands as a beautifully transformed, vintage-inspired treasure that honors its historic surroundings while pushing creative boundaries.
Today, standing in this character-filled room as a performing artist, I feel a profound sense of exhilaration knowing that my music is connecting the deep, gritty history of the neighborhood with the modern soul of the venue.
What made this session at Canvas so defining was the ultimate collision of these timelines. Through my sophisticated looper pedal setup, I brought cutting-edge electronic evolution into a room built on raw heritage. It is a live-looping system specifically engineered to unleash endless sonic possibilities using just a single guitar and raw, yet meticulously precise, multi-instrumental layerings.
On this night, the repertoire knew no boundaries. We journeyed from the complex, traditional jazz architecture of John Coltrane’s Giant Steps all the way to a fresh, urban rendition of Bobby Brown’s New Jack Swing Classic Don’t Be Cruel. Reimagined with my signature R&B style infused with a fiery, infectious Latino vibe, the music commanded the room. Watching the audience jaw-dropped, stamping their feet, and tapping their fingers in perfect unison to the rhythm was pure artistry in motion.
The auditory experience was seamlessly heightened by the alchemy behind the bar—Canvas’s legendary cocktails and exceptional Spanish tapas created a sensory pairing you simply cannot experience anywhere else in Brisbane.
A night this perfect is never a solo effort. I want to express my deepest gratitude to the incredible team at Canvas. The top-tier hospitality from the kitchen staff—Lemon and Sam—and the brilliant bar crew—Noah, Enoch, Shery, and Maia—truly elevated the entire evening.
A special, heartfelt thank you goes to Erika, whose creative vision and direction behind the media and production brought the stunning visuals, photos, and videos of this session to life for this blog. And to Ross, one of my biggest fans, thank you for always being there with the loudest applause and unwavering support.
Above all, I give all thanks to God for blessing me with the talent, the opportunity, and this precious time to share my music with such a wonderful community.
NEWair Jazz Club is more than just a live performance; it is a catalytic catharsis. It is an Artist-Driven Session where the audience, the venue, and the music fuse together to create an irreplaceable chemistry. Thank you, Canvas, and thank you to everyone who stepped into our world. The journey continues.
