The Beautiful Synchronicity of Jazz and Mind: Why Your Weekend Ritual Matters
I recently came across a fascinating neuroscientific study comparing the human brain to other species. It noted that when simpler creatures, like reptiles, move their limbs, their cognitive processing practically pauses—their brain shifts strictly into a hardwired survival mode.
Humans, however, are beautifully different. When we engage our hands and feet—whether creating, playing, or navigating—our brain activity doesn't freeze; it thrives. Our neural pathways fire up, our prefrontal cortex illuminates, and our cognitive intelligence expands through sensory-motor integration (Schore & Edelman, 2018). Moreover, when people feel the infectious excitement of jazz—its syncopated rhythms, free harmonies, and soaring melodies—they naturally start tapping their hands on the table or stomping their feet. These organic, instinctive gestures are not just random movements; they are brilliant, neurological mirror responses of the human brain actively processing and dancing with the music.
This scientific truth suddenly made me look at my audience last week at The Raven Hotel with a deep sense of wonder.
While I was busy using my own hands and feet to weave jazz melodies on my guitar and pedals, I looked out and saw a living, breathing tapestry of human intelligence in its most relaxed, beautiful form. You weren't just passively listening. You were sharing whispered laughs with old friends, petting your beloved dogs, or deep in concentration over a game of chess and cards—all while letting your fingers drum along to the beat.
At the same time, treating yourself to the venue’s incredible food, or slowly sipping a glass of Chardonnay, a crisp sparkling wine, a sweet Moscato, or a rich Tawny port, becomes an entirely different experience. It elevates the evening far beyond just tasting a good drink or a delicious meal. When these sensory pleasures meet the live notes floating through the air, it creates a magical synergy. That is the true power of the jazz I play: it transforms a simple dine-and-drink routine into an immersive, soul-stirring sanctuary.
Every single movement of your hands—flipping a card, moving a chess piece, comforting a furry friend, or holding a wine glass to toast—was actually your brain expanding, finding comfort, and embracing peace.
To me, that is the ultimate validation of the vibe we are building together. My performance is not just a show to look at; it is a safe space where your mind is free to play, create, and gently wind down from the hectic week. The synergy between my playing, your cozy weekend rituals, and the warm hospitality of The Raven Hotel is a perfect match.
If you missed out last week, don't worry. There is always a seat, a fantastic menu, and a piece of jazz waiting for you. Why not bring your favorite puzzle, your best friend, or your furry companion next time, and let your brain find its rhythm?
On October 16, at 8:00 PM, a truly magical chapter was written, bridging the deep historical roots of Woolloongabba with the modern beats of live music.
The area of Woolloongabba—situated right opposite the iconic Gabba stadium—is a pocket of Brisbane steeped in well over a century of history. A hundred years ago, this very precinct thrived as the absolute heart of the city's transport and tramway hub. It was a bustling gateway where lines met, tracks crossed, and the city’s energy was generated.
Nestled perfectly inside this heritage-listed precinct is Canvas Brisbane. While the bar itself doesn't stretch back a century, it holds a monumental place in Brisbane's modern cultural history. Launched in 2010, Canvas was one of the very first venues approved under Queensland's small bar licence scheme, pioneering the city's boutique nightlife scene and turning this antique shopping district into a sophisticated lifestyle hub. Now under the curation of Dan Rodriguez, Canvas stands as a beautifully transformed, vintage-inspired treasure that honors its historic surroundings while pushing creative boundaries.
Today, standing in this character-filled room as a performing artist, I feel a profound sense of exhilaration knowing that my music is connecting the deep, gritty history of the neighborhood with the modern soul of the venue.
What made this session at Canvas so defining was the ultimate collision of these timelines. Through my sophisticated looper pedal setup, I brought cutting-edge electronic evolution into a room built on raw heritage. It is a live-looping system specifically engineered to unleash endless sonic possibilities using just a single guitar and raw, yet meticulously precise, multi-instrumental layerings.
On this night, the repertoire knew no boundaries. We journeyed from the complex, traditional jazz architecture of John Coltrane’s Giant Steps all the way to a fresh, urban rendition of Bobby Brown’s New Jack Swing Classic Don’t Be Cruel. Reimagined with my signature R&B style infused with a fiery, infectious Latino vibe, the music commanded the room. Watching the audience jaw-dropped, stamping their feet, and tapping their fingers in perfect unison to the rhythm was pure artistry in motion.
The auditory experience was seamlessly heightened by the alchemy behind the bar—Canvas’s legendary cocktails and exceptional Spanish tapas created a sensory pairing you simply cannot experience anywhere else in Brisbane.
A night this perfect is never a solo effort. I want to express my deepest gratitude to the incredible team at Canvas. The top-tier hospitality from the kitchen staff—Lemon and Sam—and the brilliant bar crew—Noah, Enoch, Shery, and Maia—truly elevated the entire evening.
A special, heartfelt thank you goes to Erika, whose creative vision and direction behind the media and production brought the stunning visuals, photos, and videos of this session to life for this blog. And to Ross, one of my biggest fans, thank you for always being there with the loudest applause and unwavering support.
Above all, I give all thanks to God for blessing me with the talent, the opportunity, and this precious time to share my music with such a wonderful community.
NEWair Jazz Club is more than just a live performance; it is a catalytic catharsis. It is an Artist-Driven Session where the audience, the venue, and the music fuse together to create an irreplaceable chemistry. Thank you, Canvas, and thank you to everyone who stepped into our world. The journey continues.
What makes a perfect night out in Brisbane or the Gold Coast? It’s not about the biggest stage or the loudest crowd. It’s about the perfect alignment of immaculate atmosphere, premium drinks, and music that adapts to the space.
Welcome to NEWair Jazz Club.
The name NEWair comes from a very simple, passionate concept: Anywhere. As a nomad multi-instrumentalist, my mission is to bring a fresh breeze of sound to unique spaces. Armed with portable power and a sophisticated looper setup, I can transform any intimate venue into a high-energy, full-band jazz lounge—as long as we have a roof to block the rain and sun.
This is what I call Artist-Driven Jazz Sessions. It’s an organic collaboration where the music and the venue complement each other perfectly.
If you are a local culture seeker, a private function organizer, or a visitor looking for the most authentic, urban nightlife around Brisbane and the Gold Coast, here is the ultimate guide to the finest cultural hot spots. These are the premium spaces where my live loop sessions bring the room to life:
1. The Canvas & The Tailors (Woolloongabba, Brisbane)
An incredible dual-concept experience created by hospitality visionaries Dan Rodriguez and Adam Pykett.
Canvas: A beautifully sophisticated, intimate space famous for high-end tapas and artisan cocktails. It’s the ultimate date-night spot where my live looper setup builds a warm, rich full-band layer, creating an exclusive jazz lounge feel.
The Tailors: Right next door, this hidden speakeasy is a masterpiece for premium functions and exclusive private events. Having performed here multiple times, I can assure you that adding a live-looped jazz session to your private function here elevates the evening into something unforgettable.
2. Mr. Badgers & The Copacabana Club (Woolloongabba, Brisbane)
Another brilliant, interconnected destination by Dan and Adam that brings vintage Brisbane charm and moody, creative aesthetics together.
Mr. Badgers: We embrace this unique, compact space by delivering a surprisingly massive wall of modern jazz sound that keeps the energy alive all night.
The Copacabana Club: Connected to the venue, this space offers an incredible vibe where the energy of my live loops seamlessly transitions into a high-end club experience. Perfect for both casual nights out and premium table bookings.
3. Miami Marketta: Cargo Stage, Mona Lisa's Lair Champagne Bar & Gin Parlour (Gold Coast)
The absolute epicentre of the Gold Coast's independent art and live music culture. Under the brilliant leadership of Emma and the incredible spatial curation of Stage Artist Director Mella, Miami Marketta is a visionary playground.
Performing on their legendary Cargo Stage is always an electric experience. But what makes this place truly magical is their exceptional design sense in exclusive spaces like Mona Lisa's Lair Champagne Bar and the sophisticated Gin Parlour. My live loop sessions are tailored precisely to match the deep, artistic, and immersive premium atmosphere they have created here.
4. Electric Avenue & Mrs J. Rabbits (Woolloongabba, Brisbane)
A legendary speakeasy bar that was previously under Dan and Adam’s ownership. This immaculate destination has been one of my absolute favourite regular venues. While ownership transitions can change performance schedules, this spot remains a timeless staple of Brisbane’s hidden nightlife. The sophisticated, old-world charm of Electric Avenue combined with the secret, mysterious vibe of Mrs J. Rabbits provides the perfect architectural canvas for a rich, modern jazz loop session.
5. The Raven Hotel & The Underground Cellar (West End, Brisbane)
A legendary venue with a fantastic, authentic local soul.
While the main bar is great, the true magic happens downstairs in The Underground Cellar. As a regular performer in this historic cellar—which also hosts top-tier comedy clubs and regional hot spots—I've seen firsthand how this private, moody space becomes the talk of the town during exclusive private gatherings and late-night sessions.
6. Act I: Suite for 20 at The Imperial Hotel (Gold Coast)
Music is the ultimate acoustic architecture that can elevate a premium space into an unforgettable multi-sensory experience. A definitive milestone for NEWair Jazz Club was our ultra-private audio-visual installation, executed behind closed doors inside a luxury suite at the legendary Imperial Hotel Gold Coast (formerly Palazzo Versace).
The High-Fashion Chemistry: Curated strictly for an intimate assembly of twenty VVIP guests, this exclusive session featured my deep Neo-Soul live loop deconstruction of Maxwell's classic, "Ascension." This session beautifully demonstrated how independent live-looped jazz serves as the perfect harmonic counterpart to high-end luxury fashion and elite private showcases.
The Creative Collaborators: This milestone was made possible through an incredible alignment of visionaries, featuring exquisite curation and wardrobe by Wesson Store and Kiriaki, set against the immaculate backdrop of The Imperial Hotel. Beautifully captured and archived by cinematographer Erika Tatsumi, this session stands as a testament to what happens when independent music, premium hospitality, and luxury fashion perfectly collide.
How to Experience NEWair Live (Booking & Reservations): Instead of the usual commercial spots, come discover what happens when premium hospitality meets independent, live-looped jazz art.
To ensure the best experience, I highly recommend booking your tables or private function spaces directly with the venues via their official websites. Make sure to secure your spot on the nights of the NEWair Jazz Club sessions!
